Common core state standards
What are the CCSS (Common Core State Standards)?
The Common Core State Standards inform educators on what students should know and what they should be able to do by grade level. The CCSS provide a grade-by-grade framework for introducing specific skills that will produce college and career ready young adults. As a teacher, the CCSS will provide a guide, focus and purpose for designing lesson plans, goals, objectives and assessments.
Reading standards for elementary grades K-5 are written for literature, informational text and foundational skills. The standards are designed to incorporate a balance of persuasive, informational and entertainment texts into the curriculum. Everyday, children within my classroom will practice skills and strategies that will help them meet grade level expectations. It is my responsibility to design purposeful and effective lessons that arm my students with the tools they need to meet the CCSS and to become fluent, independent readers who know how to think critically, problem solve and process as they read.
Please read the attached document to learn more about the CCSS that will be implemented within your child’s classroom.
